SANYO Electric and SOMA Networks Launch Advanced Broadband Wireless Technology Products
Announce Jointly Developed Compact Base Station NPM 2000 and SOMAport™ 400 Series Featuring System on Chip Technology
SINGAPORE, 15 June 2006 – SANYO Electric Co., Ltd. a leading manufacturer of consumer electronics and communication technology products, and SOMA Networks, Inc., a leading provider of mobile WiMAX technology, today announced commercial availability of their jointly developed, next generation broadband wireless base station, the NPM 2000 and SOMAport 400 series subscriber gateway products. Incorporating advanced mixed signal “System-on-Chip” (SoC) technology and fully integrated 802.11b/g (WiFi), the SOMAport 400 series is the industry’s most advanced subscriber product. The new line of SoftAir™ products offers next generation chip technology, untethered multimedia over WiFi, industry leading macro-cellular coverage, and a compact product footprint. The new product family will be on display at CommunicAsia 2006, to be held at the Singapore Expo Center from June 20 through 23.
“We are proud to offer a new line of SoftAir products which is the result of a strong collaboration between SOMA’s expertise in broadband wireless access technology and SANYO’s long experience in developing and manufacturing advanced communication equipment that has earned a glowing reputation not only in Japan but throughout the global market,” commented Yukiteru Nishio, General Manager of New Communications System Equipment Unit at Telecom Company, SANYO Electric. “We will continue to strengthen our product line to offer our customers the most attractive and competitive broadband wireless access (BWA) products.”
“The joint SoftAir products were designed to solve communication providers’ challenges in deploying successful broadband services with compact, flexible and innovative technology, ” said Yatish Pathak, Chief Executive Officer of SOMA Networks. “Our partnership with SANYO has resulted in the ability to deliver leading technologies, such as mixed signal SoC, integrated WiFi, and extended range devices. As a global powerhouse in wireless communications equipment, SANYO has the experience to develop advanced technologies and offer BWA products on a scale that was previously not possible. SANYO’s proven R&D experience and manufacturing support, combined with SOMA’s technology innovation, ensures that our customers will receive the most advanced technology available."
Product Features:
Building on the advanced features of the SoftAir system, the new products will offer similar benefits such as fully integrated, toll-quality VoIP, multi-megabit broadband, easy to install plug-and-play subscriber gateways, and cost-effective macro-cellular coverage.
* SOMAport 400 Series:
The mixed-signal SoC is one of the key ingredients that makes the SOMAport 400 the most advanced and highly integrated broadband wireless subscriber unit on the market today. The SoC contains a processing core, multiple DSP cores and other high-speed signal-processing logic and peripherals. Integrating both software upgradeable VoIP and high-speed wireless modem processing on a single chip results in a more flexible and robust device. To further enhance convenience for subscribers, an integrated WiFi option is available enabling subscribers to use the SOMAport 400 as a wireless access point, eliminating the need for additional cables.
Optional Long-Range Unit: Within the SOMAport 400 series, a long-range model SOMAport 410 will be available for rural applications. This model offers extended coverage by allowing wireless signals to travel twice the distance thereby allowing four times the cell coverage area. For outdoor installment, this model is designed to be waterproof and dustproof, leveraging SANYO’s industrial design expertise in outdoor networking equipment.
* NPM 2000 Base Station:
The new NPM 2000 base station is an all IP, wireless multimedia platform that offers service providers higher subscriber density and macro-cellular coverage. Using advanced engineering, the basic architectural design delivers high availability in a new compact size, allowing carriers to reduce operating costs and initial deployment costs.
SoftAir products offer advanced multimedia applications and superior performance based on WiMAX-ready technology. The flexibility of the new products provides connectivity to a wide range of communications and computing devices via Ethernet and USB interfaces, or to wireless LAN devices through an integrated WiFi connection. Subscribers can also activate advanced telephony capabilities instantaneously by simply connecting a standard POTS phone. The SOMAport product family features non-line-of-sight, advanced antenna technology for superior in-building coverage with the convenience of a portable gateway. Subscribers are free to move the device between home and office, or to any other location within the carrier’s coverage area.
