BSNL WiMAX Deployment Makes InfoWorld100 Top IT Solutions for 2008 Partnership with SOMA Networks Honored for Largest WiMAX deployment in the Industry IDG’s InfoWorld announced that Bharat Sanchar Nigam, Ltd (BSNL) and its partnership with SOMA Networks was named a winner of the InfoWorld 100 awards in the Technology category. The InfoWorld 100 awards honor companies for IT projects that exemplify intelligent, creative uses of technology to meet business and technical objectives. "Breathing new life into outdated operations, advancing business goals with inventive use of technology -- this year's winners demonstrate, once again, that innovative, business-minded IT is the lifeblood of successful organizations," said Jason Snyder, Senior Editor for InfoWorld. BSNL is India’s largest telecommunications company providing a comprehensive range of telecom services throughout India. With a rapidly growing middle class and highly educated population, India currently has an enormous unmet demand for broadband services. BSNL conducted year-long, rigorous wireless equipment testing with several vendors, including SOMA. At the completion of the evaluation, SOMA equipment was found to be the best in terms of subscribers per sector per square kilometer, the best distance propagation of any other solution, and the ability to offer voice, data and fax service simultaneously. BSNL uses SOMA’s FlexMAX Mobile WiMAX System, which includes base stations, tower mounted radios utilizing MIMO and AAS, a Home Agent, Authentication Server, indoor non-line of sight subscriber gateways and an outdoor NLOS gateway. The technology used in the FlexMAX System is entirely based and in compliance with the 802.16e-2005 (Mobile WiMAX) standard. By deploying SOMA Networks’ end-to-end Mobile WiMAX solution, BSNL will deliver a full range of multimedia services to an area serving more than 250 million people — representing a major step forward in realizing the Indian government’s “Vision 2010” mandate to make broadband services ubiquitous and turn India into a global information technology force. The deployments take place in India’s fastest growing and highest income states, Gujarat, Maharashstra and Goa, and Andhra Pradesh.
