Our corporate headquarters in San Francisco is located in the trendy SOMA Design district, with an abundance of restaurants and shops. Embedded Linux Developer

Position Description

SOMA's Toronto office is looking to hire engineers for the Transport team. The Transport team creates basic infrastructure for our embedded Linux platforms including boot loaders, Linux distributions, device drivers and networking infrastructure. To achieve this, we use a mix of open source packages and custom platform specific software.

Essential Requirements:

We are looking for energetic and innovative self-starters who want to work with our skilled team of embedded Linux developers. We are looking for candidates with Linux development experience. The ideal candidate will:

  1. Prefer working in an all Linux development environment
  2. Be comfortable programming in C
  3. Be familiar with one or more scripting languages such as Bash, Python, and Perl, and build tools such as Make
  4. Have worked on or with open source projects.

    Additional Skills and Experience Desired:
  5. Have experience working in one or more embedded or real-time environments such as embedded Linux and VxWorks
  6. Understand networking and networking software
  7. Have developed system level software such as device drivers, daemons, network server programs.

Linux Application & GUI Developer

Currently, SOMA is seeking a Linux Application Developer for our Toronto office, which is in the heart of Toronto’s entertainment district.

Position Description:

The Linux Application and GUI developer will be a part of the Software Engineering team working
on a new large scale project. Specifically:

Submitting new architectural and design ideas for user applications, interface elements
Designing and developing new user applications and GUI for an embedded desktop device
Documenting all created APIs for libraries and external interfaces to applications
Documenting application execution and sequences using UML and sequence diagrams
Installing and configuring Open Source client/server applications
Customizing existing Open Source and in-house written applications
Installing and configuring Open Source applications and servers

Key Requirements

Very strong "C" programming language skills in Linux/UNIX environment mandatory
Strong script programming skills in Bash, Perl, Python
Strong Object Oriented design skills with working knowledge of C++ and/or Java
Strong background of developing applications in X windows and GDK/GTK widget set is preferred
Strong background in Linux/UNIX network programming - TCP/UDP, IPSec, ssh keys
Working knowledge of software version control systems, like CVS, Subversion, GIT or BitKeeper
Familiarity with design and usability of GUI applications
A background in relational databases, SQL, PostgreSQL, mySQL,  ODBC
Good personal initiative, interpersonal & teamwork skills
Analytical and detail oriented
Knowledge of Ash, LUA would be an asset.

Senior Wireless Modem RTL Architect

Our Ottawa Office is seeking a Senior Wireless Modem RTL Architect for contributing to the development of our next generation product. Our office is conveniently located in the heart of Ottawa’s Byward Market district so we are easily accessible by OC Transpo and surrounded by restaurants and shops. The Ottawa office itself takes 3 floors of office space that includes a bike rack area, expansive lunchroom, test lab and open floor plan desk set-up.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Lead RTL (verilog) architecture and development activities
Lead technical meetings with an outsourced radio design team
Review radio architecture and digital signal processing algorithms (e.g., DPD)
Lead modem integration in the lab with an OBSAI radio
Participate in the modem board design and integration activities

KEY REQUIREMENTS:
8 years experience with RTL coding targeted at FPGA’s and CPLD’s, RTL simulation and RTL architecture design
4 year experience in digital signal processing (DSP) for wireless systems, including a solid background in radio architecture and modem algorithms
8 year experience with Lab Test Equipment (e.g., logic analyzer, digital oscilloscope)

Other skills evaluated:
Experience with Xilinx FPGA devices and tools
Familiarity with high-speed hardware design&test techniques
Familiarity with standards (WiMAX, OBSAI, SRIO)
Experience with code revision control tools
Familiarity with windows or Linux platforms
Oral and written skills.

Core Network Engineer

WiMAX Core Network Engineer that will work on developing detailed WiMAX core network architecture and configuration for SOMA customers.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • High level design of the core infrastructure and network element configuration:
    • Network diagram
    • Configuration schemas for Home Agent, DHCP, AAA and ASN GW
    • VoIP solution architecture (SIP, PSTN Gateway configuration)
    • Recommendations of 3rd party hardware and software
  • Recommendation on backhaul alternatives
  • Guidelines and procedures for integration of existing core network infrastructure elements
  • Problem management and root cause analysis
  • Producing relevant documentation and performing tests to ensure that that the core network solution meets customer requirements.

KEY REQUIREMENTS:

  • Computer Science or Telecommunications Degree (BSc, MSc)
  • 7+ years of experience
  • Advanced knowledge of WiMAX wireless technology, ASN and CSN interfaces and protocols
  • In depth understanding MPLS, TCP/IP and Ethernet protocols
  • Extensive working experience in designing the complex IP solutions based on IP and MPLS networks
  • VoIP expertise
  • Working knowledge of Network Management tools/protocols (SNMP)
  • Experience in configuring Cisco routers and switches in a service provider environment
  • CCNP or CCIE
  • Ability to translate business opportunities and requirements into the set of technical requirements
  • Work with customers by using strong interpersonal skills
  • Willingness to travel extensively
