SOMA Networks Signs Contract with NTT Communications for Deployment of Wireless Broadband ‘Last-Mile’ Solution
Telecom Giant Adopts Industry-Leading IP Solution to Deliver
Broadband Data and Carrier-Grade Voice Services to Japanese Market
San Francisco – April 2, 2002 – SOMA Networks today announced that it has signed a contract with NTT Communications Corporation (“NTT Com”) to conduct a market trial deployment of SOMA Networks’ next-generation wireless broadband solution in Japan. One of the global leaders in telecommunications, NTT Com selected the SOMA system – which delivers true carrier-grade voice, multi-megabit data, and unlimited multimedia services over a wireless broadband air interface to the residential and small-office market – for its deployment.
“The physical and competitive barriers of the local copper wire loop have hindered the ability of innovative companies to bring new services and functionality over what has come to be called ‘the last mile,’” said Yatish S. Pathak, co-founder, president, and CEO of SOMA Networks. “SOMA Networks has created a solution that opens up the residential market for highly profitable local and long-distance telephone services, broadband Internet access, and innovative network-based applications. We are excited to work with NTT Communications to introduce our ‘broadband anytime, anywhere’ system to the Japanese market – one of the most technically sophisticated wireless and broadband markets in the world – which we believe will appreciate the quality and quantity of services the SOMA system offers.”
Key features of the SOMA Networks system include:
- True wireless nomadic broadband access with spectral efficiencies that lead the industry;
- Large cell radiuses requiring only one-tenth as many basestations as the competition to roll out the system;
- Sophisticated Quality of Service (QoS) for all types of multimedia applications including voice;
- True carrier-grade voice with full Class-5 functionality;
- An open service creation platform that enables the rapid and inexpensive deployment of unlimited multimedia services and network applications; and
- Non-line-of-sight access, enabling subscriber indoor self-installation of the SOMAport™ customer premises equipment.
In contrast to data-only, short-radius wireless alternatives, SOMA Networks’ solution provides service providers with a compelling business case that maximizes potential revenues and minimizes costs. By deploying the SOMA system, service providers are able to offer the revenue-generating voice, data, and multimedia services that customers demand, while at the same time significantly reduce capital and operational costs by shrinking the initial cost of deployment and eliminating the need for expensive truck rolls, custom installations, and large call centers.
NTT Com has cited multiple goals for its market trial, including evaluating the SOMA system’s non-line-of-sight access capability and IP data throughput rates, as well as conducting application services marketing research utilizing commercial subscribers.
NTT Com’s market trial deployment is scheduled to begin in early summer 2002, pending approval of the trial spectrum license. The spectrum for the trial is likely to be in the 2.500-2.700GHz band.
“NTT has been a leader in wireless deployments, and its choice of SOMA Networks for a wireless broadband trial shows the confidence that it has in SOMA’s technology,” said Emmy Johnson, principal analyst for Sky Light Research. “SOMA’s innovative solution enables carriers to provision sophisticated voice and data services as well as achieve a faster ROI. SOMA, through its ability to offer carriers multiple revenue streams through one solution, is well positioned to take advantage of the tremendous market that is crying for efficient voice and data services.”
