SOMA Networks Signs Contract with Always On Network for Commercial Deployment of Fully Converged Wireless Broadband and Carrier-Grade Voice Solution

Always On Network Launches Rollout of SOMA Networks’ Amosphere System in Oregon

San Francisco – June 25, 2002 – SOMA Networks and Always On Network, a provider of last-mile wireless telecommunication services, today announced that the two companies have signed a contract to commercially deploy SOMA Networks’ industry-leading next-generation wireless broadband solution. Using SOMA Networks’ Amosphere™ system, Always On Network will offer low-cost broadband Internet access, as well as carrier-grade voice service, to the residential and small-office market.

Always On Network plans to launch the service in July 2002 in Klamath County, Oregon. The company plans to extend service to markets in Idaho, Hawaii, and the U.S. Virgin Islands over the next year. With a focus on reaching consumers that are currently underserved by other broadband options, Always On Network will offer its Internet access and voice service packages at competitive prices.

“Our particular business requires that we offer our customers self-installable equipment and multi-megabit service, while covering large geographic areas with relatively few cell sites. After rigorously screening a variety of wireless broadband products, we found that SOMA Networks is the only company that can deliver,” said Quentin Breen, CEO of Always On Network and a founder of General Cellular Corp., a predecessor of Western Wireless. “With its low cost of entry, high throughput and capacity, and revenue-enhancing functionality, SOMA’s Amosphere system offers the best service provider business case in the industry.”

In selecting SOMA Networks as its wireless broadband partner, Always On Network cited the following key features of the Amosphere system:

  • Industry-leading cellular coverage and capacity with multi-megabit data rates;
  • Sophisticated Quality of Service (QoS) that enables true carrier-grade voice capability and differentiated pricing of services;
  • Non-line-of-sight access, enabling simple subscriber installation of the SOMAport™ customer premises equipment and eliminating the need for expensive truck rolls and custom installations;
  • Quick and easy subscriber service activation and continuing customer care via the Internet or telephone; and
  • Nomadic capabilities.

Amosphere features the industry’s leading wireless broadband technology optimized for both voice and data services and dramatically improves the economics of delivering communications services by lowering capital and operating costs and maximizing potential revenue per user. Built on a foundation of industry-proven wideband CDMA technology, enhanced for Internet performance using patent-pending, state-of-the-art radio and QoS techniques, the SOMA Air Interface™ delivers peak rates of up to 12 Mbps per user, carrier-grade voice, and managed multimedia services. Amosphere supports PCS, MMDS, WCS, and 3.5Ghz spectrum.

“The Always On team has a demonstrated history of rapidly building successful wireless businesses, and its decision to deploy Amosphere validates the leading position of SOMA’s technology on cell radius, capacity, and ease of integration,” said Greg Caltabiano, Senior Vice President for Worldwide Markets at SOMA Networks. “We are excited to partner with Always On Network in underserved markets, opening up high-speed Internet access to consumers across the United States like never before.”
